Modern Slavery Statement
This statement is made pursuant to Section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and outlines the steps that Montu Group UK Ltd (branded as Alternaleaf), and Montu Pharmaceutical Ltd; forthwith referred to collectively as ‘Montu’, has taken, and continues to take, to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking within its business and supply chain.
Modern slavery includes slavery, servitude, forced or compulsory labour, and human trafficking. Montu, as a licensed provider of plant medicine services in the UK, is committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards and acting with integrity in all aspects of its operations—from patient care and clinical practice to the sourcing of plant medicine products.
Our Business
Montu Group UK Ltd (branded as Alternaleaf), is a UK-registered plant medicine provider operating as a specialist clinic
Montu Pharmaceutical Ltd operates as a remote dispensing pharmacy.
We work with licensed producers and distributors of plant medicine-based products for medicinal use (CBPMs), both within the UK and internationally, particularly in Europe and North America.
High-Risk Areas
The global nature of our supply chain presents some inherent risks, particularly where third-party manufacturers or distributors are based outside the UK in jurisdictions with varying labour and regulatory standards. We identify heightened risk in agricultural supply chains, packaging, and third-party logistics services.
To mitigate this, we:
- Source only from licensed and GMP-certified producers.
- Require supplier declarations and documentation on ethical labour practices.
- Conduct due diligence and, where appropriate, request third-party audit evidence or certifications.
Our Policies and Practices
We maintain a suite of internal policies to uphold ethical conduct and ensure our operations are free from modern slavery. These include:
- Anti-Slavery and Human Trafficking Policy – Sets out our position on modern slavery, how concerns should be reported, and how we manage compliance.
- Clinical Governance Framework – Ensures transparency, ethical practice, and accountability across all patient-facing and operational activities.
- Recruitment Policy – Includes robust checks on right to work in the UK and prevents exploitation through agency or subcontracted labour.
- Whistleblowing Policy – Provides all staff with a confidential route to raise concerns without fear of retaliation.
- Supplier Code of Conduct – Outlines the standards we expect from all third-party partners, including clear commitments to labour rights, wages, and working conditions.
Our Supply Chain
All suppliers, including manufacturers of CBPMs, transporters, packaging providers, and technology vendors, are subject to a vetting process. This includes:
- Ethical due diligence during supplier onboarding.
- Requirement to confirm compliance with the Modern Slavery Act (if applicable).
- Inclusion of modern slavery clauses in supplier contracts.
- Monitoring for changes in ownership, geographic risk, or labour practices.
For high-risk suppliers, we may request:
- Third-party audit evidence
- Social compliance certifications (e.g., SEDEX, SA8000)
- Confirmation of minimum wage compliance (UK or international as relevant)
Training and Awareness
We provide regular training to relevant staff—including clinical, pharmacy, and procurement teams—on identifying and reporting signs of modern slavery or exploitation in our supply chain or contracted services.
Performance Monitoring
To assess the effectiveness of our approach, we track the following indicators:
- 100% of new suppliers reviewed for modern slavery risk
- Zero reports of modern slavery incidents received via internal or external channels
- Annual policy reviews and updates
- Compliance of high-risk suppliers with our ethical sourcing standards
We are committed to continuous improvement in this area and to collaborating with our partners to raise standards throughout the supply chain.
